How to Create an Outdoor Space Buyers Will Love

Updated: Jun 21, 2022

A well-thought-out landscape can do wonders for your curb appeal AND increase the value of your home. Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry, I promise it doesn’t have to be hard! Here are my 5 easy steps on how to make your curb appeal beyond appealing. Step One: Find out what plants thrive in your region

Picking plants that naturally thrive in your area will decrease the amount of upkeep required to take care of them, making it easier on you.

In Haldimand, there are a lot of plants that survive/thrive on the lake. My #1 go-to plants are Hostas because they take off easily and don’t require a whole lot of maintenance.

I also love perennials that come up every year because I don’t like to replant things, PLUS they help with selling your home because it is less work for future home buyers too!

Fountain grass is another great option for outdoors- and indoors! I love putting them inside planters on my deck; they survive just like grass and you don’t need to cut them.

Step Two: Pick the plants that work for you

Take a moment to think about how you want your gardens to present, and then factor in how much work you're actually willing to do because some plants require more/different maintenance than others.

Roses, Jasmine, Honeysuckles or even fresh herbs can provide beautiful, fresh, floral scents in your yard that everyone loves.

Fruit trees can also be fun to harvest and will stay with the property, increasing its value. Plum, peach, pear or apple trees work best in northern climates.

At the end of the day, choose the kinds of plants that you are willing and realistically able to maintain in and around your home.

Step Three: Choose your planters

Finding planters can be fun, or maybe you already have some at home! Either way, try to make them pop, but for best results pick ones that are within the style of your home.

Step Four: Hang up a hummingbird feeder

Hummingbirds are great because they spread pollen to help your flowers grow more easily, creating a colourful, more vibrant garden for you without having to lift a finger. Thanks, hummingbirds!

Step Five: Maintenance is key!

Make it easy and take some time each weekend to water the plants and remove any weeds, keeping your yard space looking clean, fresh and beautiful!

By following these 5 easy steps, you will surely find the maintenance-friendly plant options that work for you, your area, AND your home’s curb appeal.
